Aspen's urban renewal vision for the City Central precinct is to create a special place tailored to the lifestyle needs of its working, living and visiting population. It will be a prestigious address, providing a harmonious balance of commerce, hospitality, residential, retail, recreation and entertainment facilities.
Whether restoring or regenerating existing heritage structures or creating exciting new built forms, development decisions will continue to be based on ecologically sustainable criteria.
Scattered among the buildings will be intimate and people friendly recreational spaces including a landscaped plaza, interconnected walkways and a blend of cafes, restaurants and casual eateries. The eventual population of City Central will run to many thousands and will provide a significant source of on-going support for the retail tenancies.
The City Central precinct development is designed to shift the focus of Adelaide's CBD closer to Victoria Square, where there is already a diverse surrounding mix of government, commercial, professional, cultural, entertainment and hospitality establishments within minutes of the precinct, as well as public transport and parking stations.
Development in the north east area of the precinct is well underway with the completion of Building 1 and Building 2. Immediately to the south of Building 2 along King William Street is Electra House, planned to be redeveloped into a two level bar and restaurant facility to compare with The Establishment in George Street, Sydney
The remaining areas of the block are earmarked for adaptive reuse of the GPO, Telephone Exchange and DarIing House heritage buildings, together with proposed new hotel, residential and commercial developments.
The Precinct is adjacent to the amenity and open space of Victoria Square and is well served by public transport facilities including the main tram and bus routes along King William Street. The Adelaide Railway Station is within easy walking distance to the north.
Car parking in the immediate vicinity is also extremely well catered for, with a number of public car parking stations nearby.
Rundle Mall. South Australia's retail hub and one of the most successful shopping malls in Australia, is located within 500 metres. This location is extremely beneficial to the City Central Precinct as, while it is close to the retail heart and shopping facilities, it does not suffer from being positioned within the retail area and the inherent problems of congestion and peak hour pedestrian flows.
Adelaide's famous Central Market, Chinatown and the cafe and restaurant precincts of Gouger and Grote Streets are a short walk to the south.
